CLI Week in Review (April 21)

Published on 24 April 2023

This has been a fabulous week…so much happening as we edge ever closer to May!

*Amazing CLI Generative AI (GAI) Roundtables with legal educators (clinicians), law firm innovation + transformation professionals, legal operations professionals, and peeps working in the community legal centre/pro bono/low bono sector – huge thanks to our facilitators and everyone involved. Next week, we’ll chat with small, boutique and mid-tier private practice law firms. And, we have a new CLI GAI Initiative homepage – woohoo!

*Two GAI related articles caught my eye, both from Law.com:

  1. From Isha Marathe highlighting the sort of practical professional responsibility, ethical, risk management, and professional insurance issues potentially arising from the use of ChatGPT in law firms. It also speaks to the consequent need for internal/external use policies and professional guidance for lawyers and their law firms.
  2. From Cassandre Coyer highlighting the INaccuracy issues with ChatGPT in the context of privacy issues/protections under the GDPR.

* We focussed on NewLaw careers in our Women Legal Business Founders and Leaders series this week (https://bit.ly/WLBFLSeries2023). An outstanding session from wonderful humans Melissa Lyon, Liz Fernando, Kate Greenwood and Katherine Thomas. Amazing careers, life stories, and really candid, practical advice – fabulous – video and podcast next week! As I listened, I jotted down some key words that captured for me how traditional legal practice is transforming – here they are: tradition vs innovation; hierarchy vs equality; authority vs autonomy; control vs collaboration; competitors vs colleagues/community; outputs vs hours; linear vs portfolio careers – what would you add to this list?

*Want to chat all things legaltech? Don't forget to register for our inaugural Legaltech Confab - Digital Roadmaps for Legal Businesses with legaltech evangelist Fiona McLay - it's on 27 April at 1pm AND it's free!

Have a fantastic weekend everyone!
