SYDNEY: January 24 2018: Clayton Utz Special Counsel Samy Mansour has been appointed as the first Distinguished Fellow of the Centre for Legal Innovation (CLI).

Named a ‘rising star’ by Australasian Lawyer and Doyle’s Guide to the Legal Profession, Mansour’s legal career has involved some of Australia’s most significant energy, resources, transport and infrastructure matters, working for a range of Australian and international clients.

Mansour is an Innovation Champion at Clayton Utz and the author of numerous articles on innovation including commentary on the NSW Innovation Strategy and the Australian Digital Economy Strategy. His passion for innovation has led him to seek formal training in innovative thinking at Swinburne University and at the science-focused innovation consultancy Inventium.

In his new role, Mansour will focus on the future of legal practice by developing seminars, courses and workshops on how to innovate and become a legalpreneur.  The appointment will be for one year.

Mansour’s first project will be a CLI Digital Legal Practice and Innovation Masterclass where he will facilitate sessions on developing an innovative mindset and applying it to legal practice. The Masterclass will be held in Sydney between February 23 and 24.

Ms Terri Mottershead, Director of the CLI welcomed the appointment saying Mansour’s work will benefit legal professionals wanting to make innovation a core part of how they work.

“Innovation is driving change in all aspects of the legal profession. Samy’s experience will be invaluable in the work the CLI is doing to support  the profession in responding to and leading disruption and to stay competitive,” Ms Mottershead said.

Mansour said he was excited to be part of the CLI and to have an opportunity to contribute to the dialogue on legal innovation in Australia.

“I hope the work I undertake as part of the CLI Distinguished Fellow program will encourage members of the profession to think about risk-taking and failure in a different way. My goal is to inspire others to take some simple, practical steps to develop their own innovative culture, wherever they work,” Samy said.

Appointment as a CLI Distinguished Fellow is open to anyone who has a proven practice-based specialism or expertise that intersects law and innovation. Distinguished Fellows contribute to developing and delivering the Centre's events, workshops and course development.
