The Missing Ingredient in Legal AI - Humans

Investment in talent and skills not keeping pace with the investment in technology

CLI hosting Artificial Intelligence in Legal Practice Summit to lead industry response

SYDNEY: October 18, 2017: Law firms are overlooking the crucial element needed to make artificial intelligence (AI) effective – the human.

The Centre for Legal Innovation (CLI) recently completed a series of roundtables with thought leaders in the legal industry on the impact of artificial intelligence on legal practice.

Director of the CLI, Ms Terri Mottershead said: “One of the many things that emerged from the roundtables was that a gap is forming between what AI can do and what lawyers unfamiliar with the technology are utilising.”

“The investment in the depth and breadth of talent and capabilities of the humans who interact with AI is not keeping pace with the investment in the technology itself.”

“Law firms and legal departments need to be sure they are investing in recruiting, developing or upskilling a multidisciplinary workforce that uses AI to deliver legal services and products more effectively, more efficiently and differently than in the past,” Ms Mottershead said.

The CLI is hosting an AI Summit to bring together professionals working inside and outside the legal industry from many different backgrounds to network, share experience, discuss and explore an opportunity, challenge or roadblock in the use of legal AI in expertise automation, legal research or contract analytics, now and in the future. Participants will work on an issue under the guidance of a multidisciplinary expert panel acting as mentors and advisors.

“We believe the summit will move the conversation away from hype and scaremongering to meaningful, practical conversations about the use of AI to provide legal solutions and the talent needed to deliver them” Ms Mottershead said.

The Summit will take place on Friday October 20, 2017, at the offices of Gilbert + Tobin in Sydney.
